Ghosts of Hiroshima is a survivor-centered, “you-are-there” narrative history of the atomic bombings, built from years of forensic-archaeology research and more than 200 interviews with hibakusha and families, arriving to mark the 80th anniversary of Hiroshima’s bombing on August 6, 1945. The book follows figures including Tsutomu Yamaguchi—who survived both Hiroshima and Nagasaki—and Manhattan Project engineer Jacob Beser, interweaving ground-level accounts of the blasts’ physics and human impact with the long-term effects of radioactive fallout on children and communities.
